I’m really considering writing my first chubby!fic but I’m super scared I’m going to be run off of AO3 or something. I don’t know for some reason I just have a lot of PARANOIA about it. Do you have any tips for someone who is wanting to start writing kinky fic? Especially if they haven’t written anything in a long, long time??
hi friend!! that’s so exciting!! your first fic!!
BUT I know that’s also SUPER INTIMIDATING!! (but trust me! you will not be run off of ao3. ao3 is such a hotbed of bizarre kinky business that I am positive you’ll be fine.) here are some tips that I’ve found helpful while writing, especially starting out:
- write what YOU want to read. that’s why I began writing fic at all tbh. I didn’t see the kinky content I wanted, so I began creating it myself. write what makes YOU happy! if chubby!Character X is popular on tumblr, but you’re really really feeling chubby!Character Z and no one seems to be, WRITE CHUBBY!CHARACTER Z ANYWAY! you’ll have fun and I GUARANTEE that you’ll make someone’s day. which brings me to point 2:
- you are basically NEVER the only person thirsting for whatever highly specific content you are creating. nine and a half times out of ten, someone will come out of the woodwork and tell you that they’re so happy you wrote this because they’ve been LOOKING EVERYWHERE or WAITING FOR YEARS for this kind of kinky content, and they’re SO HAPPY that someone else is into it too. so if you’re hesitating because you’re like, “no one else will want to read this! this is way too niche for another person to want!”, don’t let that hold you back. I promise that someone else is out there, wishing and hoping that someone will write about EXACTLY THAT. (OR, someone will read it and have an epiphany à la “I NEVER KNEW I WANTED THIS UNTIL I READ THIS, AND NOW IT’S ALL I WANT.” trust me. there’s always someone else.)
- sometimes it takes me a lot of time and tries to get something right. the first draft of your kink fic MIGHT be horrible! but that’s what first drafts are for. sometimes you need someone else to look at it and tell you that you’ve used the term “soft” four times in this paragraph or to use a FUCKING comma for the love of GOD montresor. play around with voice first. write a fun scene you’re really excited about to get into it, and go from there. which brings me to …
- if you’re unsure of how it reads, and you’re uncertain about your skills, have a beta read it before posting to get another set of eyes on it! a good solid beta read can fix a lot of things and just generally make you feel a lot more reassured about your work and its readability.
- if nothing else, remember that this kink-writing community is full of SUPER NICE PEOPLE! I’ve truly never seen any feedback/response to fics here that isn’t excited or encouraging or just overall NICE.
I hope this helps!! if you have any questions, you can always come ask me! I’m very excited to see what you write about :) good luck!!
